Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is a landmark Mexican ensemble founded in Tecalitlán, Jalisco, in the late 1890s. Across successive generations, the group helped shape the modern mariachi sound through disciplined ensemble playing, sophisticated arrangements and a repertoire spanning sones, huapangos, rancheras and orchestral concert pieces. Its extensive recording history includes standards such as “El Son de la Negra,” “La Bikina” and “Guadalajara,” as well as influential work with Juan Gabriel. More than a century after its founding, Mariachi Vargas remains an international standard-bearer for traditional Mexican music.
